1. Dear Colleagues,

In the future the Secretariat of the World Association for Buiatrics would like to prepare newsletters in order to be able to give up-to-date information’s to the members of the Executive Committee of the WAB, the National Associations affiliated to the WAB, the correspondents from different countries not having national associations and the individual colleagues who registered at the www.buiatrics.com/newsletter registration.
Buiatrics:  The term is originated from the Greek language: "Βούς" (pronunciation: "vous") means cattle, "ιατρική" (pronunciation: "i-a-tri-ki") means medicine. "Βοοϊατρική" (pronunciation: "vo-o-i-a-tri-ki") means medicine of cattle, i.e. buiatrics. According to our best knowledge Buiatrics as a subject was mentioned in the German literature at the first time in 1835 (Rychner, Johann Jakob: Buiatrics or sporadic internal and specific external diseases of cattle / Bujatrik Handbuch, Systematische äußerliche und innerliche Krankheiten des Rindviehes, Fischer; Bern, Leipzig).
By this way we would like to provide information’s relating to the World Buiatrics Association to those colleagues who are interested in bovine medicine. If you are interested in getting the newsletter regularly you are kindly requested to register at our website.
It is free of charge and you are very welcome to join us.

Walter Baumgartner                                                                            Ottó Szenci
President                                                                                             Secretary General

2. News from the XXVI World Buiatrics Congress

Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Chilean Buiatrics Society I am pleased and honoured to invite you to attend and participate in the XXVI World Buiatrics Congress whose organisation has been entrusted to us by the World Association for Buiatrics. This event will be held in Santiago from 14 to 18 November 2010.
Buiatrics chiefly focuses on domestic ruminants whose everyday and laboratory-like capability to produce proteins and other biologically high value nutritional products for human consumption continues to amaze us. Our remit also encompasses the wildlife ruminants such as the African caribou that tends to migrate in large herds while looking for better pastures, the intrepid mouflon that has become a common sight throughout the US mountain ranges, the enduring South American cameloids, the mighty European bison, the fast African impalas, the beautiful and intrepid red deer found in Northern Hemisphere countries as well as the shy and modest looking pudu deer.
Further to the qualities described above, let us try and imitate them by gathering together with a view to becoming stronger, more enduring and capable of providing quicker answers to the requirements currently stemming from this modern society we happen to be part of.
The Espacio Riesco Convention Centre has been chosen as the suitable venue for our Congress. Here we can congregate around a fairly comprehensive trade exhibit and also become acquainted with the scientific breakthroughs ranging from meat and dairy bovine genetics, reproduction, handling, nutrition and sanitation issues as well as those concerned with buffaloes, sheep, goats and cameloids to name a few.
When you join us here in Santiago late next year you can rest assured that we will be enjoying a warm spring. While with us, we will be pleased to treat you to the golden anniversary of the Word Congresses that got underway in 1960 at Hannover as well as sharing with us the Chilean Bicentennial celebrations. If you enjoy good poetry, you may be interested to know that Chile is the birth country of the well-known Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda.
We will be looking forward to seeing you then. In sending you this note we are fully confident that you will be enjoying a much diversified geographical scenario ranging from green valleys, crystal clear rivers and lakes, breathtaking mountains, volcanoes and glaciers as well as almost unspoilt islands and very dry deserts. Should that be not enough, we are prepared to add a varied fish and shellfish gastronomy, first class wines and the traditional Chilean hospitality. At the risk of striking you as immodest, we believe you will find it difficult to refuse this opportunity to come and make acquaintance with us.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Luis Poo
Chairman of the Organizing Committee

Following the WAB initiative of allocating the organisation of the above event to the Chilean Buiatrics Society (“Sociedad Chilena de Buiatría”), the relevant Organizational Committee was set up under the Chairmanship of Dr Luis Poo, with the undersigned being entrusted with the management duties of the Scientific Committee.

7. Dear Colleagues

We just finished our newsletter at the beginning of May when we were alerted that our American server was experiencing intermittent service disruptions as a result of a distributed denial of service
(DDoS) attack – an intentionally malicious flooding of its systems from various points across the internet. Unfortunately this problem has only been solved recently. That is the reason why we have not been able to send our newsletter in time. Excuse us for this inconvenience.

Yours sincerely,

Otto Szenci
