D. Gustave Rosenberger Memorial Award

Dr José Carlos de Souza Filho, a young veterinarian from the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Bahia - Brazil, was the winner of the US$ 5.000 Gustav Rosenberger Memorial Award.
The Award was presented by Prof. J. Espinasse, President of the World Association for Buiatrics, and Prof. H.J. Breukink, member of the Board of the Gustav Rosenberger Memorial Fund.
The 24 years-old veterinarian has dedicated his academic life to buiatrics, especially in the reproduction and production fields.
The National Buiatrics Society indicated the candidates and the selection was made by the Gustav Rosenberger Memorial Board. Dr José Souza is currently working in a beef cattle herd, and has a genetic improvement program with purebred zebu cows and crossbreeding with European breeds. During his student years, participated in researches of various areas of buiatrics. As career objectives he wants to learn how veterinarians deal with cattle production and reproduction in other regions of the world and try to apply the technologies to the Brazilians conditions.

E. Pfizer Award

Dr W.I. Morrison, Senior Scientist of the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya, was named the first recipient of the newly-established Pfizer Award during the opening ceremony of the 16th World Buiatrics Congress in Salvador, Brazil.
The $ 10.000 award recognizes Dr Morrison's , outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the origin and treatment of bovine diseases caused by microorganisms.
The study of Dr Morrisan and his colleagues have provided novel information on the immune system of cattle and how the different cellular components interact in the generation of effective immune responses. Such information, as well as the reagents and techniques which have been developed during the course of Dr Morrison's work, are essential for critical studies of the mechanisms of immunity to disease in cattle. This is illustrated by the work on Theileria parva which has shown that cytotoxic T cell responses play an important role in immunity to this parasite. This information has helped to clarify the basis of the parasite strain-specificity of immunity to this parasite, and explained the difficulties encountered previously in vaccinating with dead antigens. Based on this knowledge, it is now possible to devise rational strategies for identification of antigens that could be used for vaccination. The reagents and techniques developed during this work will undoubtedly also be of value for studies of other immunological problems in cattle. Selection of the award recipient was made by the board of directors of the World Buiatrics Association which was helped by specialist referees.
The award was presented by Dr P. Lekeux, Secretary General of the World Buiatrics Association and Mr R.A. Behrenhausen, Vice-President, Marketing and Product Development, Pfizer Animal Health. This prize will be awarded at each biennial World Buiatrics Congress which is the World's leading scientist event devoted to cattle disease and production.
