A. Attendance

Upon invitation of the Italian Association for Buiatrics, the 18th World Buiatrics Congress was held in Bologna, Italy, from August 29 to September 2, 1994, in conjunction with the 26th Congress of the Italian Association for Buiatrics.
1050 delegates and 130 accompanying persons from 42 countries participated in the scientific and social programmes.

B. Scientific programme

168 oral and 171 poster communications were presented on most topics related with buiatric sciences. 4 satellite symposia were also organized.
The proceedings of this congress (2 volumes with a total of 1.601 pages) are available for institutions and official libraries and must be ordered from SOGEPACO, Piazza Constituzione, 5/c, I-40128 Bologna, Italy. Fax: 39-51-6375149.

Sydney was unanimously proposed by the Committee as the official venue of the 20th World Buiatrics Congress in 1998.

C.5. Venue of the 21th World Buiatrics Congress in 2000

The candidatures and candidacy files must be sent in 15 samples to the WAB Secretariat before April 1, 1996. The candidacy files must contain detailed information on:
-) organizing committee, scientific committee, potential major sponsors
-) geographical localization
-) local infrastructure for conferences, accommodations and social activities
-) scientific programme (invited and free presentations, satellite symposia, joint meetings, professional visits and other potential proposals)
-) social programme
-) marketing for the promotion of the congress
-) proceedings
-) simultaneous translation
-) balance of the finances
-) any other topic of potential interest for the selection of this venue.
The final decision will be taken by the WAB Committee on July 1996 in Edinburgh.

D. 1994 Pfizer Award

The winner of the 1994 Pfizer Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Knowledge in the Origin and Treatment of Bovine Diseases Caused by Microorganisms (10.000 US$) is Dr. Paul-Pierre Pastoret.
Paul-Pierre Pastoret was graduated Doctor in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Liége, Belgium, in 1970. In 1981, he became "Agrégé de 1'enseignement supérieur", defending brilliantly a thesis on the latency of Bovine herpesvirus 1. This work was awarded by the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium. Since this period, Paul-Pierre Pastoret leads the department of Virology-Immunology and Pathology of viral diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Liége. Paul-Pierre Pastoret is author and co-author of more than 490 scientific papers in the field of Veterinary Virology and Immunology. He is presently the chairman of the European Society for Veterinary Virology. His main themes of research were always related to the immunobiology of viral infections in cattle.
Dr. Pastoret is a Veterinary Virologist and Immunologist whose reputation is based on his ability to combine clinical knowledge, experimental expertise, epidemiological insight, genetic engineering and mathematical modelling. His activity therefore ranges from theoretical work to research of almost direct applicability in the field.

E. 1994 SB Gustave Rosenberger Memorial Award.

The winner of the 1994 SB Gustave Rosenberger Memorial Award is Dr S. Bolte, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Timisoara, Romania, and Head of the Department of Veterinary Surgery.
Dr Bolte was graduated DVM in 1968 and received his PhD in 1979. Dr Bolte is author of 179 scientific papers, 5 textbooks and 4 books. His research subjects are anesthesiology, stress, shock and intensive therapy, operative techniques and veterinary acupuncture.
